Status Symbols in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is certainly a city with no shortage of status symbols.  People drive cars well out of their price-range in order to “be seen.”  Real estate is high up on the status symbol ladder as well, and it’s not something you can approximate or fake.  While there are plenty of people in L.A. driving top-line Mercedes while living in a studio apartment, L.A. real estate is expensive enough that it is a true form of status.

Obviously the only reason to buy a home isn’t to show it off.  Something gains status because it is functional and beautiful.  What separates Hollywood Hills real estate from other real estate in Los Angeles are the views.  When it comes to L.A. luxury real estate, a view of the sprawling L.A. city lights takes precedence over other features of a home – even a home’s size.  In this way Hollywood Hills real estate excels over vaunted neighborhoods like Beverly Hills or Hancock Park.  Certainly, these are elegant locations – and what bigger status symbol is there than a Beverly Hills address – but the Hollywood Hills command the best views of the city.

It’s not just about being up on a perch.  There are homes in Bel-Air, Brentwood and other high-end communities that have views of the city.  But Hollywood Hills possesses archetypal L.A. views: of the Hollywood sign, the Capital Building, all the way to the ocean.  It’s the best vantage point to see the entire city, north to south, east to west.  This is what a home in the Hollywood Hills has come to symbolize the very peak of L.A. real estate.
